Brian Vowels, Capricorn Mutual

Presenting Module 1 - Overview  Brian is the President and a Director of the FSAA and has more than 20 years of experience in the insurance industry. He has worked in finance roles in organisations ranging from start-ups to ASX listed corporates and on the broking, agency and underwriting side of the business.  Brian has been an FSAA presenter since May 2010 and on the FSAA Education Committee since March 2011 and has overseen the updating of the course material through several cycles.  Outside of insurance, Brian is the Chairman and Trustee of the Australian Cord Blood Foundation and is a Justice of the Peace. He is married and has 2 young boys.

Ben Williams, KPMG

Presentig Module 2 - Premiums Ben is an Assistant Manager in KPMG’s Audit group in Sydney, with almost 6 years audit and assurance experience in the Sydney office, focusing primarily on Insurance and Superannuation clients.  He completed his Bachelor of Commerce at the University of New South Wales whilst maintaining a distinction average. Ben majored in Accounting and Finance. He is a Member of the Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand, passing all his subjects on the first attempt with distinctions in Financial Accounting & Reporting, and Audit & Assurance.  Ben is the junior manager on various concurrent audit engagements, reporting under a number of accounting standards frameworks including AASB, IFRS and US GAAP. His clients include ASX listed and global insurers. He is highly experienced in compliance reporting including APRA, AFSL and Solvency II

Kopal Gupta, KPMG

Presenting Module 2 - Premiums  Kopal is an assistant manager in the Sydney Audit Assurance and Risk Consulting practice with five years’ experience in the financial services industry. During her time at KPMG, she has worked over both general and life insurers reporting under the Australian Accounting Standards which include ASX listed, private companies and branches of foreign insurers. Kopal excels in delivering high quality audits and technical accounting analysis. Additionally, Kopal is highly experienced in compliance reporting including APRA and AFSL.

Jennifer Khonasty, KPMG

Presenting Module 2 - Premiums   Jennifer is a Senior Accountant in KPMG’s Audit and Assurance-Insurance practice in Sydney, Australia. Jennifer has assisted and executed audit and assurance services for clients in the Reinsurance, Life Insurance and General Insurance industries including ASX listed, private companies and branches of foreign insurers.

Jennifer completed her Honours in Medicinal Chemistry and Master of Professional Accounting degree at University of New South Wales whilst maintaining a distinction average. Jennifer is also a Member of the Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand with distinctions in Taxation Australia and Audit & Assurance.

Michael Byrne

Presenting Module 3 - Claims   Michael was the Commercial Motor manager and Compliance Manager for Suncorp Insurance. After 23 years, Michael left Suncorp and took a role as Commercial Division Manager for an insurance broker. He then started an underwriting agency called Transcorp Insurance Pty Ltd.  For 14 years Michael was General Manager then Managing Director and sole shareholder of Transcorp. Transcorp sells heavy motor insurance, including Public Liability and Carriers Load insurance, on behalf of various underwriters, mainly Lloyds syndicates.  Transcorp process and pay the claims for the Motor & Carriers Load. The Public Liability underwriter handles & process any of those type of claims that occur. Michael wrote the  Motor policy wording and the Carriers Load policy wording, assisted by the Marine Product Manager.  This involved extensive research over several months, analyzing all polices available in the market and consulting with brokers as to features they would like to see incorporated in the policy. This has made Michael very familiar with the nuances of Commercial Motor and Carriers Load insurance.  Michael is now busy enjoying retirement.

Erin Lee, Munich Re

Presenting Module 4 - Reinsurance  Erin joined Munich Re in 2018 as Senior Underwriter in the Property Treaty team. She has over 15 years' industry experience including reinsurance underwriting, previously at Gen Re and Swiss Re, reinsurance treaty broking at Aon and direct personal lines insurance at Comminsure. Erin is a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIIF)

Kudzi Tagwireyi, Hollard Insurance

Presenting Module 5 - APRA Kudzi is currently a Finance Manager in the Wholesale division at The Hollard Insurance Company, focusing on Select Brokers and the New Zealand branch of the company. Previously he was with PricewaterhouseCoopers, starting at the Zimbabwe office. While there he partook in short term secondments in various international offices including London, New York and Malawi. He permanently left the Zimbabwe office and joined the Sydney office, where he specialised in Life and General Insurance audit as an experienced Audit Manager. Outside work, he enjoys family time with his wife and 3 children as well as playing soccer during the relevant season.

Ashween Chand, IAG

Presenting Module 6 – Statutory reporting in the insurance industry Ashween is a qualified CA, with over 15 years of experience in the Financial Services industry. She currently works at Insurance Australia Group (IAG) as the Finance Manager – Group Statutory and Regulatory Reporting. Ashween’s team is primarily responsible for the delivery of the Group’s Annual and Half year Statutory Accounts, supporting Board materials and half yearly Level 2 APRA returns, including calculation of the Group’s regulatory capital position.

Stephen Buckley, IAG

Presenting Module 7 - Management Reporting  Stephen is a qualified CPA, with over 20 years of experience in the Financial Services industry. He currently works at Insurance Australia Group (IAG) as the Executive Manager for Group Performance Reporting. Stephen’s team is responsible for delivering regular financial performance reports to the IAG Board and Group Leadership Team, coordinating the Group’s budgeting and forecasting and supporting IAG’s investor reporting process. The team, along with the broader finance function, is focused on continually improving management reporting at IAG to ensure senior leaders are provided with the right information and insights to make informed decisions.
